Our B&B (#5)

Our family does not have a great history with Bed & Breakfast establishments.  In 2000 when we came to England with our 3 boys, we stayed in 2 different B&Bs.  The boys broke a bed in one, and I broke a computer in another one (or was it the same one?!) and the owner made me cry and told me he would not accept my apology (a story for another time).  Suffice it to say, we have never stayed in a B&B since then.  I decided it was time to break our curse so booked a B&B in York.

We ended up selecting the Arnot House...and let me tell you, it is exactly what I think a B&B should be!  It is located on this pretty little street, facing a park, just 10 minutes walk to the heart of York.

It is run by Kim Arnot who is just a few years younger than I am.  She and her mother ran it for 31 years together, until her "mum" passed away about 18 months ago.  It has 3 guest rooms, but we are the only guests here currently so it really feels like our own personal home in York, only better because I don't have to make the bed or cook breakfast!  I have already shared some photos, but I've got tons!
I love this display on the mantle in the breakfast room.  What a sweet nod to her American guests to have the US flag with the Union Jack!

Our view out the window nook that we have claimed as "our" table...birdfeeders, roses and peony bushes!

While soft classical music plays, we start each breakfast with fresh fruit.  Eggs, sausage, various cereals, scones, toast, blood pudding (no thanks), full English brekkie (complete with beans, sautéed mushroom, and grilled tomatoes...also a "no thank you" from us) are all available.  Honestly, Kim would make anything we ask for!  Over our stay here we had scrambled eggs, oatmeal, yogurts, granola, etc.  Every morning she had some yummy GF baked goods for Gary (blueberry muffins, raisin scones, raisin bread). I must say, York is amazingly easy to be Gluten Free!

The most delightful, finely minced fresh fruit salad!  It's so delish with all the tiny bits of fresh fruit!

"Our" table 💖. Bird bath, bird feeders, iron gate, beautiful flowers - all so lovely!

Kim was a fountain of info on restaurants, train tickets, theatre tickets, tea shops, loaning umbrellas if necessary (it never was!). And let me tell you, our enormous bed was perhaps the most comfy bed I have ever slept in and sit had the crispest freshly ironed sheets.  And don't even get me started on the wonders of a heated towel rack in the bathroom!  I think maybe Kim was a bit too chatty for Gary, but I loved talking with her...all topics ranging from US politics to caring for a mother with Alzheimers, to her grandfather's military service which at one point even including being a guard stationed at Windsor Castle and the Queen Mum greeting Kim's mum in her "pram".  We talked British TV, sci-fi books and movies (I wish my friend Lori had been her to talk sick-fi books with her!). She was a lovely ambassador not only for the city of York, but for Britain in general!

Quick, run and book a room at the lovely Arnot House!! (You won' regret it!). York is a lovely city and I promise you will have a great time here!!
