Bits and Bobs From York (#7)

Well, we had a few more adventures in York that I don't want to forget!

We had a fun dinner at a local pub called The Royal Arms.  The dinner was ok, but suddenly as we were finishing up, we heard live music in the front room so we grabbed our drinks and headed there.  A young man was playing the blues...he was very good - simple amplified acoustic guitar and taps on the bottom of his boots that he used for percussion.  The audience was small, but very entertaining to watch!  The "crowd" consisted of another couple about our age, a single older gentleman who looked like he probably sat on the same bar seat every single night, a young couple and the gal's mother came in with a black lab who hopped up on the corner booth seat like he owned it.  What was remarkable about them was that when the man got his Guinness he wiped the head off his beer with his finger and let the dog lick it off - this was clearly done regularly!  (sadly, I was too embarrassed to take a photo!) A sleazy dating couple in their 50's came in and they couldn't keep their hands off each other - I was glad they left after one drink!  And then 4 young drunk guys came in who were totally obnoxious.  They started asking for Metallica songs and the sweet musician did a very good handling them and denying their requests.  They eventually threw a coin on the floor and left laughing...the musician continued playing, undaunted by their obnoxiousness.  We listened for a few more songs before heading home.  It was a great way to end the evening.  For the life of me I can't figure out how to add video to the blog so a simple photo will have to do!  Not a fancy set up, but quality music!

Another evening we had theater tickets for a new play in town.  We went out for pizza before the show.  The Italian restaurant was actually in a Georgian ball room (I kept picturing scenes from Bridgerton!).  The room was lovely and the pizza was really good...both gluten free AND gluten full!  (Mine came with scissor for cutting?!)

The cool thing about this restaurant was as soon as we sat down, they put this orange metallic heart on the table, designating it as a gluten free table, so all the servers were aware.  Every time they do something like this to be so accommodating to the GF community, I get more frustrated that the US is so NON-accomodating!

And here is Gary's GF pizza...same type of pizza I ordered (and twice the toppings!) I think they take out the gluten and replace it with more toppings!!

We walked across the street to the play, The Psychic, and learned that eating a huge pizza and having a glass of wine (after walking 13K steps the same day) is not advisable before sitting in a theatre...we both dozed off during the show, missing a key part of the play which was a mystery...so the ending made NO sense to either of us!!  Lesson learned, when we go to the theater in London in a few weeks, we will eat a late lunch and no dinner!!

And no vacation is complete without Gary enjoying ice cream! (this time he found someone to enjoy it with!)

There is a lovely hotel at the top our street called the Churchill.  They have a really nice out door area and a wood fired pizza oven.  I love these "bubbles" they have!  The hotel put them out during the pandemic (remember "outdoor dining" and the whole 6 feet apart business?!) and they were were such a hit that they continued them!  The bubbles have wood floors, blankets, and nice chandeliers!  If we had one more day, I think we would have had dinner here, just for the novelty of it! Our friend Kim frequently has dinner here...so even the locals enjoy The Churchill.

And I think that's a wrap for York...time to take the train to Liverpool for the second leg of our adventure.  We loved York and highly recommend visiting here.
